FILIPINO MARTIAL ARTS

Filipino Martial Arts (FMA), also known as Arnis, Eskrima, or Kali, is an ancient, adaptable fighting art from the Philippines. FMA includes the use of impact tools (like sticks), edged tools, empty-hand techniques, and improvised weapons, following the principle “one mind, any weapon.”

Training begins with a rattan stick, a safe but realistic training tool, and the skills learned are practical and directly transferable to real-life situations. FMA is deeply rooted in Filipino tribal traditions, taught within families and communities for self-protection. It emphasises practicality and has been used historically to defend against foreign invaders. As Dan Inosanto states, FMA training is driven by love and the desire to protect loved ones.

FMA is used worldwide by military, security, and law enforcement professionals and has appeared in numerous action films. Coastal Edge Filipino Martial Arts, influenced by Datu Bram Frank, a student of Remy Presas, teaches FMA with an emphasis on practical application and legal self-defence. Each student is seen as unique, and training is tailored to individual needs, with safety prioritised in a relaxed, enjoyable environment.
